About Amyloidosis
Amyloidosis is a serious health condition in which a protein known as Amyloid builds up in our tissues and organs. In this disease, the folds of protein gets deposited over kidney, heart and sometimes even the nerves. Due to the deposition in an abnormal manner, organ cannot function properly and hence this condition results in malfunctioning of the organ. This condition may even lead to death of a person. This disease may affect all the organs of the body or may be an organ specific.
The most common form of Amyloidosis is AL amyloidosis (Amyloid light chain amyloidosis). In this condition, production of antibody proteins by the abnormal cells, present in the bone marrow, results in the amyloid. Secondary amyloidosis occurs in case of rheumatoid arthritis. Amyloidosis may occur due to hereditary reasons.
If the deposition of protein occurs over the heart, then heart is unable to pump the blood and may get enlarged. Due to this, heart failure may occur. Similarly, if the deposition takes place over the kidneys, then it leads to kidney failure.
