NATURAL TREATMENT OF ACIDITY
About Acidity
Acidity, known as Amlapitta in Ayurveda, is a prevalent issue faced by people in society. In this condition, the pitta dosha is significantly involved, compared to vata and kapha doshas.
Acidity falls under Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), where stomach acid frequently flows back into the tube connecting the mouth and stomach (esophagus), causing acidic reflux.
Acidity often leads to heartburn. The stomach contains hydrochloric acid, which aids in efficient digestion and protects against the growth of unwanted bacteria. Excessive production of this acid disrupts the gastric glands in the stomach.
Causes of Acidity
- Eating heavy meals close to bedtime
- Consuming highly spicy foods
- Lifestyle factors
- Intake of beverages like alcohol, coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks
- Smoking
- Use of anti-inflammatory medicines and certain antibiotics
- Pregnancy
- Stress and tension
Complications of Acidity
1. Ulcers
Oversecretion of gastric juices can lead to the disruption of the lining of the upper part of the small intestine. In some cases, ulcers may even lead to cancer.
2. Dyspepsia and Heartburn
Dyspepsia is the narrowing of the esophagus, resulting in a sensation of food being stuck in the throat, particularly after meals and due to excess abdominal pressure. Acidity often causes a burning sensation in the chest, burping, and occasionally chest pain.
Symptoms of Acidity
- Nausea
- Burning sensation in the chest
- Burping
- Vomiting tendency
- Chest pain
- Sensation of a lump in your throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Bloating
- Severe stomach pain
- Difficulty in breathing during acute acidity
- Erosion of gums and teeth due to hyperacidity
- Bad breath
Diagnosis of Acidity
- X-ray techniques, such as barium swallow radiograph, are used to check for esophagus complications.
- Endoscopy involves the insertion of a small tube with a camera through the mouth into the esophagus to diagnose problems.
- Biopsy may be performed to remove a small piece of the esophageal lining for diagnostic purposes, especially to identify any underlying cancer.
- Esophageal manometry checks the proper functioning of the esophagus by inserting a narrow tube through the esophagus into the stomach to diagnose acid reflux.
Causes of Acidity - According to Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, acidity is attributed to the production of Ama (toxin) in the body, leading to sourness and heat. Pitta dosha is the primary cause of acidity. An aggravation in the doshas can result from consuming spicy and sour foods, smoking, excessive consumption of tea and coffee, sleeping immediately after meals, and experiencing stress and anger.
